Garden soil is one of the topmost priorities in achieving a rich garden. The soil cannot maintain the requisite level of nutrients forever as the plants use them up over time. Hence, different fertilizers are available on the market that can assist us to get that healthy soil mix all year long. One such interesting organic fertilizer is the bone meal fertilizer.
What is bone meal fertilizer?
As the name suggests, bone meal is pulverized bones of animals. Bones are crushed into fine granular sizes to prepare them for agricultural use. Bone meal fertilizer is used as an organic fertilizer for years. It is rich in phosphorous and calcium. Compost or manure is rich in nitrogen but lacks other vital nutrients. Hence, a mixture of a bone meal with nitrogen-rich fertilizer gives a balanced soil mix for the plants. One important aspect of using bone meal as a fertilizer is the soil pH level. Bone meal is effective in acidic soil. Before using bone meal, the pH of the soil should be tested to see whether the pH is below 7. If the soil pH level is above 7 the bone meal fertilizer will not be of any benefit. Not sure about your soil pH level? Try our pH meter to test your soil. The effectiveness of the phosphorous diminishes at an elevated pH level. If used correctly, bone meal fertilizer can benefit the growth of fruiting, flowering, and rooting development till 4 months as it is a slow-release fertilizer.
Which plants benefit from a bone meal?
Bone meal is rich in phosphorous and phosphorous is an important element in the development of fruits, flowers, and roots and can be easily absorbed by plants. Hence, bone meal is good for flowering plants such as roses, tulips, dahlias, and lilies for bigger and healthier blooms and bulbs. Root crop plants also benefit from bone meal used as fertilizer. Root crops such as radishes, onions, and carrots benefit from bone meal use. Bone meals can be used in vegetable gardens as well. This will result in better and healthier yields from vegetables like tomatoes, zucchini, and peppers. Calcium also promotes new growth in roots and stems.
Can you use too much bone meal?
In some cases, overuse of a fertilizer “burns” the plant. However, the bone meal should not hurt the plants as long as you follow the instructions for fertilizing the soil. Ensure that your soil is at the proper pH level. The pH should be below 7 i.e. acidic. If not, take measures to correct the level of pH. Once the soil is tested, add bone meal fertilizer at the rate of 10 kg for every 9 sq. m. (100 square feet) of garden soil. For a smaller scale, use 100g of bone meal fertilizer per square foot of soil. Even if there is a deviation in the amount being used, the plants will not be harmed. However, the fertilizer takes 2-4 months to break down. Therefore, bone meals can be used once every four months. Other than this, the use of bone meal is harmless to the plants and is rather encouraged.
Is bone meal poisonous to humans?
Bone meal is mostly made of beef bones and therefore some people wonder if it is possible to get Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), also known as Mad Cow Disease, from handling bone meal. This is highly improbable. Plants cannot absorb the molecules that cause BSE. Nonetheless, for that extra precaution, one can wear a mask while handling the bone meal. But still, the chances of contracting the disease are highly improbable.
When should I give my plant bone meal?
Bone meal is food for plants. As it is a slow-release fertilizer, bone meal can be used every four months. Ideally, the bone meal should be mixed with rotten manure or compost pile and thoroughly mixed with the soil to achieve well-balanced soil before plantation. The plant slowly absorbs the nutrients over the growing season and resulting in a better yield.
